From the introduction, I learned that Victor Hugo intended this book, Les Mis and The Hunchback of Notre Dame to be a trilogy; nature, society and religion being the themes that connected them. Though I now know more about the ocean, tides and storms than I ever thought I'd want to know, I'm glad I read it. Having read Les Mis many years ago, next will have to be The Hunchback.
