I tried. I really did. This is an updated retelling of Dostoevsky's Crime and Punishment, set in Afghanistan. And the only thing wrong with it is I really don't care for the original. All right, I hated the original. And since this is almost a scene by scene recap of the original (or so it felt to me in excruciating detail), even the updated pertinent modern political things couldn't give it an edge. I couldn't make it much more than a quarter of the way through and even that was painful, slogging.
I will definitely try others by this writer, it's not his fault I can't stand Crime and Punishment.
